Matter and Inertia

What Is Matter?

Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space. It consists of atoms and subatomic particles, forming the fundamental building blocks of the physical universe. Everything from rocks to living organisms is composed of matter. However, while matter is essential for physical existence, it is governed by inertia—a property that prevents it from initiating movement or action on its own.

Understanding Inertia

Inertia is the tendency of an object to resist changes in its state of motion. This principle, described in Newton’s First Law of Motion, states that an object at rest stays at rest, and an object in motion stays in motion unless acted upon by an external force. This means:

  • Matter cannot initiate motion by itself.
  • Every action or movement requires an external force.
  • Without an outside influence, all matter remains passive and inert.

Since all known forms of matter exhibit inertia, it follows that matter alone cannot be self-moving, self-aware, or autonomous. This leads to a significant question: If all matter is inert, how can living beings initiate movement or thought?

The Impossibility of Self-Aware Matter

If everything we see is made of inert matter, how do we account for consciousness, self-awareness, and autonomous action? Some claim that life and awareness are simply complex arrangements of physical matter, but this explanation contradicts fundamental principles:

  1. Matter Lacks the Ability to Act on Its Own
    • The principle of inertia means no collection of matter, regardless of complexity, can initiate motion.
    • The idea that neurons firing in the brain can generate self-awareness ignores the fact that neurons, like all matter, require external activation.
  2. Self-Motion and Thought Require an External Force
    • Since all motion and change require external influence, the force that animates living beings must originate from something other than matter itself.
    • This suggests a non-material force—something beyond the physical components of the body.
  3. Awareness Is Not a Physical Property
    • There is no physical property of atoms that explains self-awareness.
    • If awareness was just a byproduct of matter, rocks, water, and air—which are also made of atoms—would show signs of awareness.
    • Awareness must be separate from the physical properties of the materials that make up the body.

The Role of an Immaterial Force

Given that matter alone cannot produce self-awareness, it is reasonable to conclude that a non-material force must exist to animate living beings. This force does not have to be supernatural or eternal, but it must be distinct from the physical body.

  • Just as a driver controls a car but is not part of the car itself, the animating force behind living beings must be distinct from the matter it moves.
  • This does not imply a permanent or unchanging soul, only that something beyond inert matter is required for self-motivated action and awareness.

Conclusion

Science confirms that all matter is inert and requires an external force to move. Since self-awareness and autonomous action cannot emerge from matter alone, there must be a non-material force that accounts for conscious experience. While this does not prove the soul is eternal or supernatural, it eliminates the possibility of self-aware matter, reinforcing the necessity of something beyond physical substances to explain motion, thought, and life itself.
